Brazilian Cruzados Banknotes & Coins We Accept

To exchange your Brazilian Cruzados for cash, select the coins or banknotes you want to add to your account below.

About Brazilian Cruzados Exchange

The Brazilian Cruzado (BRC) was a transitional currency used in Brazil during the late 1980s, introduced as part of an economic stabilisation plan before being replaced by the Cruzeiro and, ultimately, the modern Brazilian Real. We accept all denominations of Cruzado banknotes and coins, including older series and damaged notes.

Current Brazilian Cruzados Banknotes

The Brazilian Cruzado is a fully withdrawn currency — no current series exists. All Cruzado banknotes in circulation were issued during the mid-to-late 1980s and have long since been demonetised. We accept the full range of these notes, including denominations such as the 1000 Cruzados and the 5000 Cruzados, as well as all smaller denominations.

Old Series & Damaged Notes

Unlike most high street exchanges, we buy Cruzado banknotes regardless of their age or condition. All the notes in this category are withdrawn by definition, and we accept everything from lower-value notes such as the 10 Cruzados and the 50 Cruzados to higher denominations and everything in between. Damaged or worn notes are accepted provided they remain at least 50% intact, though the rate offered may be slightly lower than for notes in good condition.

Brazilian Cruzados Coins

We also accept a range of historic Brazilian coins, including Brazilian Cruzado coins as well as later Cruzeiro and Cruzeiro Real issues from Brazil’s successive currency reforms of the late 20th century. Notable examples include the 1000 Cruzeiros Reais coin and the 1000 Cruzeiros coin, along with other denominations from these withdrawn series. As with most coin exchanges, the rate is slightly lower than for banknotes due to additional handling costs.

Brazilian Cruzado Exchange FAQ

Are Brazilian Cruzados still legal tender in Brazil?

No. The Cruzado was withdrawn from circulation in the late 1980s as part of Brazil’s ongoing currency reforms, and it has not been legal tender for decades. Brazil now uses the Real — if you have leftover Reais from a trip, you can exchange those separately via our Brazilian Reais page.

Can I exchange Brazilian Cruzado banknotes that are torn or in poor condition?

Yes. We accept damaged Cruzado banknotes as long as they are at least 50% intact, which is more generous than most high street exchanges or banks. The rate for worn or damaged notes may be slightly lower than for those in good condition, but you won’t be turned away simply because a note has seen better days.

Do you buy Cruzeiros and Cruzeiros Reais coins as well as Cruzado banknotes?

Yes! In addition to Brazilian Cruzado banknotes and coins, we also accept a range of later Brazilian currencies, including withdrawn Cruzeiro and Cruzeiro Real coins. These currencies are no longer legal tender in Brazil, but we can still assess and purchase them.

How do I send my Brazilian Cruzados to you and when will I be paid?

Simply box up your Cruzado banknotes and coins and post them to us yourself — we recommend using a tracked service for your own peace of mind. Once we receive them, we’ll verify the currency and pay you within 5 working days by bank transfer or PayPal. If for any reason you’re unhappy with our offer, we’ll return your currency to you free of charge.

I have both Cruzado banknotes and Argentine Pesos from the same trip — can you exchange both?

Yes, we handle both. Brazil and Argentina are neighbouring countries and are often visited together, so it’s common to come home with a mix of currencies. You can exchange your Argentine Pesos separately through our dedicated page, and send your Cruzados to us at the same time if you wish.
