100 Cruzeiros coin (Amazon Manatee)

100 Cruzeiros — Amazon Manatee (Issued 1992-1993)

The 100 Cruzeiros was a low-value Brazilian circulation coin produced between 1992 and 1993, near the end of the cruzeiro era. It was made from stainless steel, giving it a bright, durable surface well suited to constant handling. The coin is the smallest of its group, weighing 2.38 g with a diameter of 18 mm, and was struck in a round shape. It circulated as everyday money before being withdrawn.

The obverse shows the date placed to the left of the denomination, in a straightforward design. The inscriptions read “BRASIL”, the year “1993” and the value “100 cruzeiros”, identifying the issuing country and the face value.

The reverse portrays a manatee shown below its local name, representing the Amazon manatee (Trichechus inunguis). The lettering reads “PEIXE-BOI”, the Portuguese common name for this river mammal and a further nod to the coin’s wildlife theme.
