1000 Cruzeiros — Acará Fish (Issued 1992-1993)
The 1000 Cruzeiros was a circulation coin of Brazil struck between 1992 and 1993, towards the end of the cruzeiro’s life as the national unit. It was produced in stainless steel, giving it a durable, bright metallic surface suited to everyday handling. The coin is small and light, weighing 2.96 g with a diameter of 20 mm, and was minted in a standard round shape. It passed from hand to hand as ordinary money before being withdrawn from circulation.
The obverse carries the date positioned to the left of the denomination, set against a design of Amazon river flora. The inscriptions read “BRASIL”, the year “1993” and the value “1000 cruzeiros”, identifying the issuing country and the coin’s face value.
The reverse depicts two Acará fish (Pterophyllum) placed towards the right of the field, with lettering above. The legend reads “ACARÁ”, naming the species shown and reflecting the coin’s theme of Brazilian aquatic wildlife.
