2 Cruzeiros Mil Reis (Issued 1954–1958)
Brazil’s mid-twentieth century economy was shaped by its vast agricultural exports — particularly coffee, cotton, and sugar — alongside growing industrial output as the country modernised rapidly under successive governments. The 2 Cruzeiros note, issued between 1954 and 1958, would have circulated during a period of significant economic expansion, facilitating everyday domestic transactions as Brazil’s urban populations grew and manufacturing sectors developed. This was an era in which the Tesouro Nacional managed currency supply through physical notes printed to exacting international standards. The American Bank Note Company, whose imprint appears on this note, was responsible for its production, bringing the precision engraving traditions of the United States to Brazilian currency.
On the front, the note is dominated by a finely engraved central oval portrait of Deodoro da Fonseca, the military leader who proclaimed Brazil a republic in 1889 and served as its first president, depicted here in formal military dress adorned with medals and insignia, rendered in deep blue-grey intaglio engraving of exceptional detail. The portrait is framed within an oval cartouche set against a background of intricate guilloché patterning in muted blue and warm tan tones, which extends across the entire face of the note. At the top, in bold serif lettering, the title reads “REPÚBLICA DOS ESTADOS UNIDOS DO BRASIL,” with the phrases “SE PAGARÁ AO PORTADOR” and “DESTA A QUANTIA DE” flanking the central overprint text “NO TESOURO NACIONAL” in red. The denomination numeral “2” appears prominently in red on both the left and right sides of the note. The serial number 049023 is printed in red both at the upper right and lower left, while the series designation “SÉRIE 1079A” appears at the upper left and lower right in red. Two signature lines appear at the base of the note: on the left, “DIRECTOR CAIXA DE AMORTIZAÇÃO,” and on the right, “MINISTRO DA FAZENDA.” Below the portrait, the words “DOIS CRUZEIROS” are printed in bold red lettering, with “VALOR RECEBIDO” beneath in smaller type. The printer’s imprint “AMERICAN BANK NOTE COMPANY” appears at the very foot of the note in small black capitals.
The reverse is printed entirely in a warm copper-orange tone and centres on a detailed aerial engraved vignette of the Escola Militar de Resende, the Brazilian Military Academy located in Resende, Rio de Janeiro state, depicted with its expansive neoclassical main building, surrounding parade grounds, access roads, and landscaped grounds rendered with fine cross-hatching and line engraving typical of American Bank Note Company craftsmanship. At the top of the reverse, partial text reads “REPÚBLICA DOS” in red serif capitals within a decorative banner, and at the bottom the full title “ESTADOS UNIDOS DO BRASIL” is printed in bold red lettering. The denomination numeral “2” appears in each of the four corners within decorative guilloché frames. Below the central vignette, a small caption identifying the institution as “ESCOLA MILITAR DE RESENDE” is visible in fine print. The printer’s imprint “AMERICAN BANK NOTE COMPANY” is repeated at the base of the reverse in small black type, consistent with the front. The overall paper has a clean, cream-toned quality with the single-colour reverse printing creating a striking contrast against the more elaborate polychrome front design.
