50 Cruzeiros Reais coin (Jaguar and Cub)

50 Cruzeiros Reais — Jaguar and Cub (Issued 1993-1994)

The 50 Cruzeiros Reais was a Brazilian circulation coin issued between 1993 and 1994, part of the short-lived cruzeiro real coinage. It was struck in stainless steel, giving it a robust, silvery appearance suited to regular use. Larger and heavier than the earlier cruzeiro pieces, it weighs 3.92 g and measures 23 mm across in a round format. The coin served as everyday money before being withdrawn from circulation.

The obverse displays the date to the left of the denomination. The lettering reads “BRASIL”, the year “1993” and the value “50 CR$”, identifying the country of issue and the coin’s face value in the cruzeiro real currency.

The reverse shows a mother jaguar with her cub (Panthera onca), continuing the series’ celebration of native Brazilian animals. The inscription reads “ONÇA PINTADA”, the Portuguese name for the jaguar depicted.
