10 Mil Reis Brazilian Currency (Issued 1932)

A bold, sweeping header reading “Estado do Rio Grande do Sul” dominates the upper portion of this 1932 state treasury note, rendered in large gothic-style lettering that immediately commands attention. Issued by the Tesouro do Estado do Rio Grande do Sul — the Treasury of the State of Rio Grande do Sul — this note represents a fascinating chapter in Brazilian regional financial history, when individual Brazilian states maintained their own currency-issuing authority. The overall colour palette of olive green and warm tan gives the note a distinctive, aged character that makes it immediately recognisable among Brazilian issues of the early twentieth century.

On the front, the most prominent design feature is an oval portrait vignette positioned to the left of centre, depicting Júlio de Castilhos, the influential Republican politician and former Governor of Rio Grande do Sul, whose image appeared on several state treasury notes of this period. The portrait is executed in fine intaglio engraving, with detailed cross-hatching creating depth and shading around the face and collar. Surrounding the oval portrait is an intricate guilloché border of tightly wound geometric lathe-work patterns in dark olive green ink. The central denomination text “Dez Mil Reis” is printed in bold serif capitals across the upper middle of the note, with the large numeral “10” rendered prominently in the lower centre within an ornate cartouche of scrollwork and decorative flourishes. Above the central text, a handwritten-style promise-to-pay inscription reads “Ao Portador À Doze Réis Desta Data” in cursive script. The place and date of issue, “Porto Alegre, 1º de Maio de 1932,” are printed in the lower right field. A bold cursive signature — legible as Carlos Júlio da Fonseca — appears across the lower centre of the note. Serial number 21428 appears twice: once in the upper right corner in orange-red ink and once in the lower left in dark ink beneath the series and série designations. The lower border carries the text “Thesouro do Estado do Rio Grande do Sul” in small capitals. A printer’s credit, reading “Lito do Dinevero do Globo — Porto Alegre,” is faintly visible at the lower right margin.

The reverse is printed entirely in a single deep olive-green ink and is dominated by a highly detailed engraved vignette of a grand neoclassical public building occupying the central panel. The building features a prominent central dome, a colonnaded portico with classical pillars, symmetrical wings, and wide stone steps leading to the entrance — consistent with the Palácio Piratini, the Government Palace of Rio Grande do Sul in Porto Alegre. The architectural engraving is executed with fine linework, capturing window arches, balustrades, and facade detailing with considerable precision. Flanking the central vignette on both the left and right sides are large bold numerals “10,” each set within dense guilloché panels of repeating lace-like geometric patterns. The word “Thesouro” is inscribed in an ornate banner at the top centre, with “do” beneath it in smaller text. Along the lower border, the full inscription “Estado do Rio Grande do Sul” is printed in bold serif lettering. The entire reverse composition is framed by an elaborate border of interlocking oval beadwork and foliate scroll patterns, all rendered in the same consistent green tone. A small printer’s reference is visible along the very bottom edge of the reverse.
