10 Mil Reis Brazilian Currency (Issued 1933)

Few banknotes from the turbulent early 1930s Brazilian political landscape carry the regional authority and graphic precision of this 1933 Tesouro do Estado do Rio Grande do Sul issue. A currency expert examining this note would immediately recognise it not as a federal Banco do Brasil emission, but as a state treasury instrument — a direct product of the powerful regional autonomy that characterised Brazilian federalism before the centralising reforms of the Vargas era. The 10 Mil Reis denomination, printed by the Livraria do Globo in Porto Alegre, reflects the capacity of Brazil’s southern states to issue their own financial instruments. The note’s survival in any condition today speaks to the turbulent monetary history of a republic navigating revolution and institutional consolidation simultaneously.

On the front, the note is rendered throughout in a deep steel blue and indigo intaglio engraving, dominated on the left-hand side by a finely detailed oval portrait of Getúlio Vargas, the Brazilian statesman who rose to the presidency following the Revolution of 1930 and who would go on to shape Brazilian politics for decades. The portrait is executed with considerable engraving skill, showing Vargas in formal attire with a composed, forward-facing expression, set within a finely crosshatched oval frame with decorative borders. At the top of the note, the issuing authority is stated in bold serif lettering as “O THESOURO DO ESTADO DO RIO GRANDE DO SUL”, and beneath this runs the promise text “PAGARÁ AO PORTADOR, A DOZE MESES DESTA DATA”. The central denomination text reads “DEZ MIL REIS” in large, bold capital letters, with the numeral “10” appearing prominently in stylised form towards the lower-centre of the note. A serial number, 32460, appears in the upper-right corner and again at the lower-left beneath the series designation. The place and date of issue — Porto Alegre, 1 de Maio de 1933 — are printed in the lower-right quadrant, accompanied by a flowing cursive signature identified as that of Carlos Victor de Azevedo, the authorising treasury official. Fine guilloché latticework fills the background field behind the central text, and the lower margin carries the printer’s credit reading “Lith. da Livraria do Globo, Porto Alegre”. A secondary block of small-print legal or regulatory text occupies the central band between the portrait and the denomination wording, printed in very fine type across the full width of the note.

The reverse is printed in the same rich indigo-blue tonal palette, and is dominated by a highly detailed architectural engraving of a grand neoclassical public building, identifiable as the Palácio Piratini, the seat of government of the State of Rio Grande do Sul in Porto Alegre. The building is depicted with considerable architectural precision, showing a symmetrical façade with a central pediment, columned portico, large arched windows across the piano nobile, and a glazed dome or lantern structure rising above the roofline. Stone steps and approach pathways are visible in the foreground. Flanking the central vignette on both the left and the right are large bold numerals “10”, each set within decorative cartouches formed from elaborate scrollwork and foliate ornamental borders. At the top of the reverse, a banner cartouche carries the text “THESOURO DO” in capital lettering, whilst across the lower register, the text “ESTADO DO RIO GRANDE DO SUL” is printed in bold serif capitals. The entire design is contained within a decorative border of interlocking scroll and vine motifs, which frame the composition on all four sides and are rendered with considerable engraving finesse. A small printer’s imprint line is visible along the very bottom edge.
