50 Mil Reis Brazilian Currency (Issued 1860)
The year 1860 placed Brazil firmly within the reign of Emperor Dom Pedro II, a period of relative stability and economic ambition for the Empire of Brazil during which regional banking institutions were being established to serve the country’s growing commercial needs. The Banco da Bahia, the issuing authority named on this note, represented one such regional enterprise, serving the important north-eastern province of Bahia at a time when Brazil’s banking infrastructure was still developing beyond the capital. This note therefore stands as a tangible record of provincial financial activity in mid-nineteenth-century Brazil, connecting the note directly to the agricultural and mercantile economy of the Bahian interior. Its issue reflects the broader national effort to introduce organised credit and paper currency across Brazil’s diverse regional territories.
On the front, the note is oriented horizontally and printed primarily in dark grey-black ink with accents of green and rose-pink, presenting the heading “CINCOENTA MIL REIS” in bold serif lettering along both the upper and lower borders of the note, with the numeral “50” appearing at each of the four corners. The issuing bank’s name, “Banco Bahia”, is rendered in large, ornate display lettering at the centre top of the design, flanked on either side by finely engraved decorative cartouches. A central vignette depicts a mounted figure on horseback navigating a rocky, mountainous landscape, engraved with fine hatching and cross-hatching typical of mid-nineteenth-century intaglio printing, suggesting a scene of travel or commerce through the Brazilian interior. To the left of the central vignette sits a prominent guilloché-style oval medallion bearing the numeral “25” in an elaborate lathe-work surround, while to its right a further panel displays the denomination value “Rs 50$000” within a decorative border. A serial number, reading “No. 9388”, is printed in red ink within an ornate panel at the centre of the composition. Below the central vignette, a text panel contains handwritten-style printed script that references the Caixa do Banco da Bahia and the promise to pay Cincoenta Mil Reis, accompanied by two manuscript-style signature lines labelled “O Presidente” and “Os Directores”, with facsimile signatures visible beneath each. Along the left-hand vertical border, the text “BANCO DA BAHIA” runs upward in bold lettering within a ruled panel, mirrored on the far left by “CINCOENTA MIL REIS” in a similar vertical arrangement. The notation “2a Serie” appears in small print above the central bank name. The overall printing reflects the restrained but precise craftsmanship of a mid-Victorian era security printer, with the guilloché work providing both aesthetic sophistication and a basic counterfeit deterrent.
The reverse of the note presents a predominantly pale, cream-toned surface through which the show-through of the front printing is clearly visible, including the ghost impression of the “Banco Bahia” heading and the central vignette of the mounted figure. At the centre of the reverse, the numeral “50” is printed in a bold, large format in olive green ink, surrounded by an intricate guilloché rosette pattern rendered in deep rose-pink on either side, forming two overlapping circular medallions with fine latticework detail. The denomination numerals “50” appear again in smaller print flanking the central figure within the pink medallions. A fine ruled border frames the entire reverse design, and traces of small ornamental text are visible along the lower horizontal border, though the impression is faint. The paper itself shows signs of age consistent with a note of this period, with visible fold lines and gentle toning, but the security printing on the reverse remains legible and structurally coherent.
