Brazil 1 Centavo coin

Brazil 1 Centavo (Issued 1986)

This one-centavo coin dates from the Cruzado, the currency Brazil introduced in 1986 in an early attempt to control inflation by dropping three zeros from the old cruzeiro. Struck in stainless steel, it is a small, light silver-coloured coin with a plain edge.

On the obverse, the coin shows the coat of arms of Brazil: a five-pointed star bearing the constellation of the Southern Cross within a ring of stars, backed by a sword and sprays of coffee and tobacco, with the ribbon inscribed “REPÚBLICA FEDERATIVA DO BRASIL” and the founding date of the Republic.

On the reverse, the country name “BRASIL” arcs above a large numeral 1, with the word “CENTAVO” and the year set below, within a beaded border and plain rim.
