This ten-centavo coin dates from the Cruzado of 1986–1989, the currency Brazil used in the years before the Cruzado Novo and, later, the real. Struck in stainless steel, it is a small silver-coloured coin with a plain edge, plain and functional in design.

On the obverse, the coin shows the coat of arms of Brazil: the five-pointed star with the Southern Cross constellation encircled by stars, set on a sword with coffee and tobacco branches, and the ribbon reading “REPÚBLICA FEDERATIVA DO BRASIL” with the Republic’s founding date.

On the reverse, the country name “BRASIL” curves above a large numeral 10, with the word “CENTAVOS” and the year beneath, within a beaded border.
