Brazil 5 Centavos coin

Brazil 5 Centavos (Issued 1989)

This five-centavo piece is from the Cruzado Novo coinage of 1989–90, a currency reform that renamed the money and whose coins honoured Brazilian working life. It is a small stainless-steel coin, silver-grey and light, with a plain edge.

On the obverse, the coin shows a fisherman hauling his catch, surrounded by curling ornamental scrollwork and small stylised fish, with the date beneath, a nod to the maritime communities of Brazil’s long coastline.

On the reverse, the denomination is given as a large numeral 5 over the word “CENTAVOS” with the country name “BRASIL”, set against a sweeping motif of the national flag and stars.
