The old large five pence coin dates from the first decimal series introduced in 1968, when it replaced the shilling at the same size and value. Struck in cupro-nickel with a silvery finish and a reeded edge, it measured just under 24 millimetres across — noticeably larger than the smaller 5p that replaced it in 1990.
