British £1 Note (2nd Series Treasury Issue) Issued 1914

British banknotes were issued in different denominations by the United Kingdom Treasury including this £1 banknote from the 2nd Series Treasury Issue. This £1 note forms part of the withdrawn pre-decimal series of British banknotes. This note was issued in 1914 at the beginning of the First World War and was later withdrawn from circulation when Treasury currency was replaced by later wartime and Bank of England pound notes.

This £1 paper banknote is printed in black and pale cream tones and is printed on one side only, with the reverse left blank. On the obverse side, across the top, appears the heading “United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland” with the statement “One pound Currency Notes are Legal Tender for the payment of any amount” printed beneath. In the centre is a large ornamental panel containing the denomination “ONE POUND” in bold decorative lettering. At the lower left is a large pound symbol “£1”.

At the upper left and upper right are oval portrait medallions showing King George V in profile, each surrounded by a circular inscription bearing his royal titles. Beneath the central panel is the authority text stating that the note was “Issued by the Lords Commissioners of His Majesty’s Treasury under the Authority of Act of Parliament (4 & 5 Geo. V ch. 14)”. The serial number appears near the centre, and the signature of John Bradbury, Secretary to the Treasury, is printed prominently at the lower right.

The reverse of this note is unprinted, reflecting the simplified emergency production methods used during the early years of the First World War, with security relying on paper quality, watermarking and detailed front-side engraving rather than a printed reverse design.
