At the right appears a large red value marking showing “£1”. The serial number is printed beneath the central panel, and the signature of John Bradbury, Secretary to the Treasury, appears prominently in red at the lower right.

The reverse of this note is unprinted, reflecting the rapid emergency production methods adopted at the start of the First World War, with security relying on specialised paper, watermarking and detailed front-side engraving rather than a printed reverse design.
