10 British Pence (GBP) Coin 1992 Onwards

£0.092460

1 GBP = £0.924600

The British 10 Pence coin in its current smaller format was introduced in 1992, replacing the original larger 10p coin first issued at decimalisation in 1971. The size reduction was part of a wider modernisation of UK coinage aimed at improving handling, reducing metal costs, and aligning the denomination more proportionately within the circulating coin set. Although smaller in diameter and lighter in weight, the coin retained its full face value.

Struck in cupro-nickel, the new 10p coin features the portrait of the reigning monarch on the obverse. Over the years this has included effigies of Queen Elizabeth II (by Raphael Maklouf, Ian Rank-Broadley, and Jody Clark) and, more recently, King Charles III. The edge is milled, helping differentiate it from similar-sized denominations and enhancing durability in circulation.

From 1992 to 2008, the reverse design displayed a crowned lion passant guardant, representing England and forming part of the Royal Arms. In 2008, the Royal Mint introduced the Royal Shield redesign, with the 10p coin now bearing a segment of the shield that completes the full Royal Arms when combined with the other denominations in the series. The denomination “TEN PENCE” appears clearly on the reverse.

Although the new-style 10p coin remains legal tender, large quantities frequently accumulate in tills, collection buckets, vending operations, and household jars. Many banks restrict bulk coin deposits or require strict packaging standards, and they do not accept foreign coins at all.
