British 10 shilling Banknote (1st Series) Issued 1914

£0.462300

1 GBP = £0.924600

British banknotes were issued in different denominations by the United Kingdom Treasury including this 10 shillings banknote from the 1st Series Treasury Issue. This 10 shillings note forms part of the withdrawn pre-decimal series of British banknotes. This note was issued in 1914 at the outbreak of the First World War and was later withdrawn from circulation when later Treasury and Bank of England issues replaced early wartime currency.

This 10 shillings paper banknote is printed in red ink on pale cream paper and is printed on one side only, with the reverse left blank. Across the top appears the statement “These Notes are a legal Tender for a payment of any amount”, followed by the issuing authority text stating that the note was issued by the Lords Commissioners of His Majesty’s Treasury under the authority of Act of Parliament.

In the centre is a large decorative panel bearing the denomination “TEN SHILLINGS” in bold Gothic-style lettering. At the upper left is an ornate vertical medallion containing a crowned portrait of King George V in profile, surrounded by elaborate floral scrollwork and the letter “R” beneath the portrait. At the right appears a large red “10/–” value marking. The serial number is printed below the central panel, and the signature of John Bradbury, Secretary to the Treasury, appears prominently in red at the lower right.

The reverse of this note is unprinted, reflecting the rapid emergency production methods used during the early months of the First World War, with security relying on paper quality, watermarking and detailed front-side engraving rather than a printed reverse design.
