British 10 shillings Banknote (3rd issue) Issued 1948
£0.462300
1 GBP = £0.924600
British banknotes were issued in different denominations by the Bank of England including this 10 shillings banknote from the 3rd issue series. This 10 shillings note forms part of the withdrawn pre-decimal series of British banknotes. This note was issued in 1948 and was later withdrawn from circulation following the introduction of decimal currency in the United Kingdom.
This 10 shillings paper banknote is predominantly red-brown and sepia in colour. On the obverse side, at the centre, is a classical seated figure of Britannia holding a trident and shield, enclosed within an ornate circular medallion. To the right is a decorative panel containing the value “10 Shillings”, while to the left appears a matching ornamental cartouche. The central text reads “Bank of England – Promise to pay the Bearer on Demand Ten Shillings”, with the issuing city LONDON printed below. The design includes elaborate scrollwork, floral engraving and the signature of the Chief Cashier along the lower right.
On the reverse of the note is a symmetrical ornamental composition dominated by large curling acanthus leaves and scroll patterns. In each upper corner appears the value “10/–” inside a decorative frame, while the centre is left open to highlight the detailed engraved background. The reverse design is entirely ornamental, reflecting the traditional security engraving style used on mid-twentieth-century Bank of England notes.
