British 10 shillings Banknote (3rd Series Treasury Issue) Issued 1918
£0.462300

British banknotes were issued in different denominations by the United Kingdom Treasury including this 10 shillings banknote from the 3rd Series Treasury Issue. This 10 shillings note forms part of the withdrawn pre-decimal series of British banknotes. This note was issued in 1918 during the First World War and was later withdrawn from circulation after Bank of England issues replaced Treasury currency.
This 10 shillings paper banknote is predominantly green and pale cream in colour. On the obverse side, on the left, is a large allegorical figure of Britannia standing, holding a trident in her right hand and a shield bearing the Union flag in her left. Across the centre is a bold black banner reading “TEN SHILLINGS”. On the right-hand side is an oval portrait medallion of King George V facing left, surrounded by the inscription “GEORGIVS V D.G. BRITT: OMN: REX”. Above the portrait is the royal crown, and beneath appears the wording “Currency Notes are Legal Tender for Payment of any Amount”. The serial number is printed at both ends of the note, together with the signature of the Secretary to the Treasury along the lower right.
On the reverse of the note is a pale green ornamental design dominated by a central cartouche containing the value “TEN SHILLINGS”. This is surrounded by delicate scrollwork and fine line engraving. The background includes faint repeating security text and watermark-style printing, with the reverse remaining largely uncluttered, reflecting the simplified but secure style adopted for wartime Treasury currency.
