British £100 White Banknote Issued 1725
£350.000000
1 GBP = £3.500000
British pound banknotes were issued in early handwritten and engraved formats by the Bank of England, including this £100 White Banknote issued in 1725. This note forms part of the withdrawn historic series of British banknotes and represents the highest denomination produced during the White Banknote era. Banknotes of this value were intended exclusively for major banking, government and institutional transactions and were issued in extremely small numbers.
This £100 paper banknote is printed in black ink on cream paper and is printed on one side only, with the reverse left blank. Due to the extreme rarity and long circulation life of this denomination, surviving examples are often partial or incomplete, and the images shown reflect the condition in which such notes are most commonly preserved.
At the top of the note is an ornate engraved Bank of England heading executed in elaborate calligraphic script. To the upper left appears an engraved decorative cartouche containing a classical female figure, a long-standing security and identity motif used on early White Notes. The main body of the note contains engraved and handwritten text stating the formal promise to pay the bearer the sum of One Hundred Pounds on demand.
The denomination “One Hundred” is displayed prominently within an engraved ornamental scroll panel toward the lower left of the note. A handwritten serial number appears near the upper section, while the place and date of issue are shown as London, with the date handwritten beneath the main text. Handwritten cashier signatures and additional manuscript annotations are visible across the surviving portion of the note, confirming authorisation and value.
The reverse of this £100 White Banknote is unprinted, consistent with early Bank of England production methods. Security relied on paper quality, engraved denomination panels, handwritten numbering and authorised signatures rather than a printed reverse design.
