20 British Pence (GBP) Coin

The British 20 Pence coin was introduced in 1982 to bridge the gap between the 10p and 50p denominations within the UK’s decimal currency system. Designed to provide greater flexibility in everyday transactions, the 20p quickly became a widely used circulating coin. Its distinctive seven-sided equilateral curve shape allows it to be easily recognised while remaining mechanically compatible with vending and coin-handling systems.

Struck in cupro-nickel, the obverse of the 20p coin features the portrait of the reigning monarch. Since its introduction, this has included successive effigies of Queen Elizabeth II by Raphael Maklouf, Ian Rank-Broadley, and Jody Clark, and more recently King Charles III. The edge of the coin is smooth, distinguishing it from milled denominations such as the 10p and £1 coins.

From 1982 until 2008, the reverse displayed a crowned Tudor rose, representing England and forming part of the traditional Royal Arms symbolism. In 2008, the Royal Mint introduced a new reverse design as part of the Royal Shield coinage series. The 20p coin now features a segment of the Royal Shield, which forms the complete Royal Arms when arranged alongside the other circulating denominations. The denomination “TWENTY PENCE” is clearly inscribed on the reverse.

Although the 20p remains legal tender, significant quantities often accumulate in retail cash drawers, charity collections, and domestic coin jars. Many high-street banks impose limits on coin deposits or require coins to be bagged in specific quantities, and foreign coins are generally refused altogether.
