British £30 White Banknote Issued 1725
£150.000000
1 GBP = £5.000000
British pound banknotes were issued in early handwritten and engraved formats by the Bank of England, including this £30 White Banknote originally issued in 1725. This note forms part of the withdrawn historic series of British banknotes and represents a very high denomination for the early eighteenth century, intended primarily for commercial and institutional use rather than everyday circulation.
This £30 paper banknote is printed in black ink on cream paper and is printed on one side only, with the reverse left blank. At the top centre is an ornate engraved heading reading “Bank of England” in flowing calligraphic script. To the upper left is an engraved decorative cartouche featuring a classical female figure, a common early security emblem used on White Notes of this period.
The main body of the note contains engraved and handwritten text stating the formal promise to pay the bearer the sum of Thirty Pounds on demand. A handwritten serial number appears prominently near the top of the note. The place and date of issue are shown as London, 7 January 1848, reflecting later validation or reissue markings applied during the note’s circulation life.
Toward the lower left is an engraved ornamental scroll panel prominently displaying the denomination “Thirty” in stylised lettering. The lower section of the note includes the handwritten authorising signature made on behalf of the Governor and Company of the Bank of England, together with additional handwritten annotations and accounting marks typical of early manuscript-issued banknotes.
The reverse of this £30 White Banknote is unprinted, consistent with early Bank of England production methods. Security relied on high-quality paper, engraved denomination panels, handwritten serial numbers and authorised signatures rather than a printed reverse design.
