5 British Pence (GBP) Coin

The British 5 Pence coin in its current smaller format was introduced in 1990, replacing the original larger 5p coin issued at decimalisation in 1971. The size reduction followed the introduction of the smaller 10p coin in 1992 and reflected a broader modernisation of UK coinage to improve practicality, reduce production costs, and align dimensions more closely with circulating needs. Despite the size change, the denomination and value remained the same.

The new 5p coin is struck in cupro-nickel and features the portrait of the reigning monarch on the obverse. Since 1990, this has included successive effigies of Queen Elizabeth II (by Raphael Maklouf, Ian Rank-Broadley, and Jody Clark) and, more recently, King Charles III. The date appears alongside the portrait, and the edge is milled, providing both durability and tactile distinction.

From 1990 until 2008, the reverse displayed a crowned thistle, symbolising Scotland and representing one of the floral emblems of the United Kingdom. In 2008, the Royal Mint introduced a redesigned reverse as part of the Royal Shield coinage series. The 5p coin now features a segment of the Royal Shield, which forms the complete Royal Arms when arranged together with the other circulating denominations. The denomination “FIVE PENCE” is clearly inscribed on the reverse.

Although the smaller 5p coin remains legal tender, significant quantities often accumulate in retail environments, charity collections, and household coin jars. Many banks limit the volume of coin deposits they will accept without pre-sorting or packaging requirements, and foreign coins are typically declined altogether. If you would like to exchange foreign coins and notes, our UK-based service provides a straightforward way to process surplus UK and overseas currency.
