British £5 White Banknote Issued 1945
£4.623000
1 GBP = £0.924600
British banknotes were issued in different denominations by the Bank of England including this £5 white banknote from the post-war series. This £5 note forms part of the withdrawn pre-decimal series of British banknotes. This design was first issued in 1945 and later withdrawn from circulation when the modern coloured series was introduced.
This £5 paper banknote is printed in black ink on cream-white paper, giving rise to the nickname “White Fiver”. On the obverse side, at the left, is an engraved medallion showing Britannia seated, holding a trident and shield. The centre of the note features ornate calligraphic text reading “Bank of England – Promise to pay the Bearer on Demand the Sum of Five Pounds”, with the issuing city London and the issue date printed below. The serial number appears at the upper left and lower right, and the signature of the Chief Cashier is printed along the lower section. The overall design is dominated by flowing cursive lettering, scrollwork and fine line engraving typical of mid-twentieth-century Bank of England notes.
On the reverse of the note is a pale printed background containing official bank and postal control markings. The design includes circular and oval embossed seals, hand-stamped issue and duty marks, and ornamental flourishes. The reverse is largely unillustrated, reflecting the utilitarian style of the White Fiver series, with security relying on paper quality, watermarking and official stamping rather than pictorial imagery.
