The current British 50 Pence coin has been in circulation since 1997, when the Royal Mint introduced a smaller, lighter version to replace the original 1969 large-format 50p. The distinctive seven-sided equilateral curve shape was retained, ensuring instant recognition while improving practicality and reducing production costs. Today, the 50p remains one of the most widely used — and widely collected — circulating coins in the United Kingdom.
Struck in cupro-nickel, the obverse of the modern 50p features the portrait of the reigning monarch. This has included effigies of Queen Elizabeth II (Ian Rank-Broadley and later Jody Clark) and, more recently, King Charles III. The coin’s smooth edge and unique shape make it suitable for vending and automated systems while remaining easy to identify by touch.
From 1997 to 2008, the reverse displayed Britannia seated with shield and trident. In 2008, the Royal Mint introduced the Royal Shield redesign, with the 50p now featuring the lower portion of the Royal Arms shield. However, what truly distinguishes the 50p denomination is its extensive use for commemorative designs. We accept all versions of the current 50p coin, including Olympic designs, Beatrix Potter series coins, Paddington Bear issues, historical anniversaries, cultural tributes, and all other circulating and commemorative designs — provided they are standard UK circulating 50p coins.
Although the 50p remains legal tender, significant quantities often build up in retail environments, charity collections, fundraising buckets, and household coin jars. Banks frequently limit bulk coin deposits or require strict bagging standards, and foreign coinage is generally refused altogether. If you would like to exchange leftover currency, our UK-based service provides a straightforward solution for processing surplus UK and overseas coins.
