British pound banknotes are issued in different denominations by the Bank of England including this £50 pound banknote featuring Queen Elizabeth II. This £50 banknote forms part of the current polymer series of British banknotes. This £50 note was issued in 2021 and remains legal tender throughout the United Kingdom.
This £50 polymer banknote is predominantly red and burgundy in colour. On the obverse side is a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II facing right, positioned on the right-hand side of the note. To the left is an illustration of the Bank of England building in Threadneedle Street. A large transparent polymer window appears to the left of centre and contains a gold and green crown security feature with micro-lettering and a colour-shifting foil that changes between the word “Fifty” and a patterned symbol when tilted. The wording BANK OF ENGLAND and FIFTY POUNDS appears across the design together with the Chief Cashier’s signature and serial number.
On the reverse of the note is a portrait of Alan Turing, the mathematician and codebreaker, based on a photograph from the National Portrait Gallery. Behind the portrait are technical diagrams and code-breaking references associated with the Enigma and Bombe machines. To the left appears a gold foil image of a cyclist representing Turing’s interest in cycling, along with a depiction of a Turing machine tape and binary code. Beneath the portrait is the quotation “This is only a foretaste of what is to come, and only the shadow of what is going to be.” The design also includes a large transparent window with intricate security patterns and repeated micro-text of the value “50”.
