British £60 White Banknote Issued 1725

£210.000000

1 GBP = £3.500000

British pound banknotes were issued in early handwritten and engraved formats by the Bank of England, including this £60 White Banknote issued in 1725. This note forms part of the withdrawn historic series of British banknotes and represents one of the highest denominations produced during the early eighteenth century. Notes of this value were intended for major commercial and institutional transactions and were issued in extremely limited numbers.

This £60 paper banknote is printed in black ink on cream paper and is printed on one side only, with the reverse left blank. Due to the extreme rarity of this denomination, surviving examples are often incomplete, and the images shown reflect a partially preserved note, which is typical for £60 White Banknotes of this period.

The visible design elements include an engraved Bank of England heading in flowing calligraphic script, together with an engraved decorative cartouche containing a classical female figure, positioned toward the upper section of the note. The handwritten promise text confirms the obligation to pay the bearer the sum of Sixty Pounds on demand, written in cursive manuscript style. A handwritten serial number is present near the top of the note.

The place and date of issue are visible as London, 12 August 1747, indicating later circulation or validation markings applied during the note’s lifetime. An engraved ornamental denomination panel is partially visible, consistent with the scroll-style panels used on other high-denomination White Notes of the period. Handwritten cashier signatures and additional ink annotations appear in the lower portion of the surviving note, confirming authorisation and value.

The reverse of this £60 White Banknote is unprinted, reflecting early Bank of England production methods. Security relied on paper quality, engraved headings and denomination panels, handwritten serial numbers and authorised signatures rather than a printed reverse design.
