This commemorative crown was issued in 1981 to mark the wedding of Prince Charles, The Prince of Wales, and Lady Diana Spencer. Struck in cupro-nickel with a diameter of 38.6mm and a face value of twenty-five pence, it was produced in very large numbers as a keepsake of the royal wedding rather than for everyday circulation. It is a large, weighty coin with a plain edge, of a kind widely kept in households across the country at the time.
On the obverse, the coin carries Arnold Machin’s portrait of Queen Elizabeth II facing right, wearing a tiara. The surrounding legend reads “ELIZABETH II D·G·REG·F·D·”, abbreviating her Latin titles as Queen by the Grace of God and Defender of the Faith, framed within a beaded border.
