British Crown (Five Shillings, 1960)

This crown was struck in 1960, a number of them produced in connection with the British Exhibition held in New York that year. A large cupro-nickel coin of 38.6mm carrying a face value of five shillings, it belonged to the pre-decimal era when the crown was the largest of the circulating British denominations, though by this date it was issued chiefly as a commemorative and collectors’ piece. It has a plain edge and a solid, heavy feel typical of the crown.

On the obverse, the coin carries Mary Gillick’s uncrowned portrait of Queen Elizabeth II facing right, her hair tied with a ribbon in a laureate style. The surrounding legend reads “ELIZABETH II DEI GRATIA REGINA F·D·”, her Latin titles as Queen by the Grace of God and Defender of the Faith, with “FIVE SHILLINGS” curving along the foot of the coin.

On the reverse are four crowned shields arranged in a cross around a central Crown, bearing the arms of England, Scotland and Ireland, with the floral emblems of the home nations set between the arms. The date “1960” is placed at the base of the design. This is the coronation-style reverse first used in 1953.
