George V Silver Jubilee Crown (1935)

This crown was issued in 1935 to mark the Silver Jubilee of King George V, celebrating twenty-five years on the throne. Struck in .500 silver with a diameter of 38.6mm and a face value of one crown, it is famous for its bold modernist reverse and is often known as the ‘rocking horse’ crown. Many were issued in a presentation box, and the coin carries a raised, incuse edge inscription in place of the usual milling.

On the obverse, the coin carries Bertram Mackennal’s bare-headed portrait of King George V facing left. The surrounding legend reads “GEORGIVS V D.G. BRITT: OMN: REX F.D. IND: IMP:”, abbreviating his Latin titles as King of all the Britains, Defender of the Faith and Emperor of India.

On the reverse, designed by Percy Metcalfe, appears a striking Art Deco rendering of Saint George on a rearing horse, thrusting his sword down at the dragon beneath. The stylised, angular treatment gives the horse its ‘rocking horse’ nickname. The legend reads “CROWN” to the left and the date “1935” to the right, framing the central scene.
