The gold sovereign is Britain’s historic one-pound gold coin, struck in 22-carat ‘crown gold’ and weighing just under eight grams. After a long pause, the Royal Mint resumed sovereign production in the late 1950s, and this 1968 piece belongs to that continued young-head series. Small, dense and finished with a finely milled edge, the sovereign was made to an exacting standard of weight and fineness that has changed little in two centuries, giving it a warm yellow lustre and a reassuring heft in the hand.

On the obverse, Mary Gillick’s uncrowned portrait of Queen Elizabeth II faces right, her hair bound with a laurel-style ribbon. The surrounding legend reads “ELIZABETH·II·DEI·GRATIA·REGINA·F:D:” in raised capitals — Elizabeth the Second, by the Grace of God, Queen, Defender of the Faith — within a toothed border.

On the reverse appears Benedetto Pistrucci’s famous St George on horseback slaying the dragon, the nude classical horseman with flowing cape driving his broken lance into the beast beneath the horse’s hooves. The date “1968” sits in the exergue below, with Pistrucci’s ‘B.P’ initials to the right, the whole design set in a plain field inside a beaded border.
