Old Large 10 New Pence Coin (Crowned Lion, Issued 1968)

The old large ten pence coin was among the first decimal pieces struck for the changeover, bearing the “NEW PENCE” wording used from 1968 until 1981. Struck in cupro-nickel with a reeded edge, it measured about 28.5 millimetres across and circulated at the same size and value as the former two-shilling florin. It remained in use until the smaller 10p was introduced in 1992.

On the obverse, the coin carries Arnold Machin’s portrait of Queen Elizabeth II facing right in the ‘Girls of Great Britain and Ireland’ tiara. The legend reads “D·G·REG·F·D·1968 ELIZABETH II” in raised capitals, with the date at the left and a beaded border framing the design.

On the reverse, designed by Christopher Ironside, stands a crowned lion passant guardant — the crowned lion of England striding to the left above the numeral “10”, with “NEW PENCE” arched over the top. The bold heraldic beast filled the broad flan of this large early decimal coin.
