Old Large 50 New Pence Coin (Britannia)

The fifty pence coin was introduced in 1969 to replace the ten shilling note, and this large type carried the “NEW PENCE” wording used until 1981. Struck in cupro-nickel as a seven-sided coin with curved edges and no milling, it measured 30 millimetres across — larger than the reduced 50p introduced in 1997 — and was the world’s first equilateral-curve heptagonal coin.

On the obverse, the coin carries Arnold Machin’s portrait of Queen Elizabeth II facing right in the ‘Girls of Great Britain and Ireland’ tiara. The legend reads “D·G·REG·F·D·1977 ELIZABETH II” in raised capitals with the date at the left, framed by a beaded border.

On the reverse, designed by Christopher Ironside, sits Britannia — the seated female figure holding a trident and an olive branch, a plumed helmet on her head, a Union shield at her side and a lion resting behind her. “NEW PENCE” arches above and the numeral “50” stands below.
