British Predecimal One Shilling Coin (Elizabeth II, English Reverse)

The shilling was worth twelve old pence, or one-twentieth of a pound, and was a mainstay of everyday pre-decimal money. This 1963 piece was struck in cupro-nickel with a milled edge and carries the English version of the reverse. When decimalisation came in 1971 the shilling continued to circulate as the equivalent of the new five pence until 1990.

On the obverse, the coin carries Mary Gillick’s portrait of the young Queen Elizabeth II facing right in the laureate style, her hair bound with ribbons. The legend reads “+ ELIZABETH II DEI GRATIA REGINA”, her titles as Queen by the Grace of God, around a beaded border.

On the reverse, designed by William Gardner, is a crowned shield bearing the three lions passant of England, with the split date “19 63” to either side and the inscription “FID·DEF ONE SHILLING” around the rim, small rosettes flanking the crown and the designer’s initials “W G” below.
