The bronze penny was the workhorse of Britain’s pre-decimal coinage, and this final design circulated from 1953 until decimalisation in 1971. On the reverse appears the seated figure of Britannia facing right, wearing a plumed helmet and holding a trident and an olive branch, resting one hand on the Union shield, with a lighthouse and a ship to the left. The value “ONE PENNY” curves around the upper edge with the date below.
