The brass threepence was worth three old pence, a quarter of a shilling, and is instantly recognisable for its thick, twelve-sided shape. This 1953 coronation-year piece was struck in nickel-brass with a golden colour and a plain-sided dodecagonal form that set it apart from the round silver coins in a pocket. It circulated until it was demonetised at decimalisation in 1971.
