Large British Fifty Pence Coin 1969

The United Kingdom Royal Mint issued British Pound coins in 16 different denominations. Included was this large British 50 pence coin. These minted coins are part of the pre-decimal and withdrawn Pound Sterling coins series. In 1969 these 0.50 (GBP) coins were first minted by the Royal Mint and in 1992 were withdrawn from circulation.

This copper-nickel 13g coin was the first coin to be minted not in the shape of a circle. The obverse side shows a figure of Britannia seated beside a lion, with a shield resting against her right side, holding a trident in her right hand and an olive branch in her left with the denomination below and legend above. The reverse side is a crowned portrait of HM Queen Elizabeth II facing right, wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland tiara.
