Large British Five Pence Coin 1968

The United Kingdom Royal Mint issued British Pound coins in 16 different denominations. Included was this large British 5 pence coin. These minted coins are part of the pre-decimal and withdrawn Pound Sterling coins series. In 1968 these 0.05 (GBP) coins were first minted by the Royal Mint and in 1990 were withdrawn from circulation.

This copper-nickel 5g coin was often referred to as a ‘bob’. The design feature on the obverse side is The Badge of Scotland, a thistle royally crowned, with wording ‘NEW PENCE’ at the top and denomination below. The reverse side design is a crowned portrait of HM Queen Elizabeth II right, wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland tiara.
