1 British New Pound (GBP) Coin – All designs

The British 1 Pound “new” coin was introduced in March 2017, replacing the original round £1 coin that had been in circulation since 1983. The redesign followed concerns over counterfeiting and introduced one of the most secure circulating coins in the world. Featuring a distinctive 12-sided shape and bi-metallic construction, the new £1 coin marked a significant evolution in modern UK coinage.

The obverse of the coin features the portrait of the reigning monarch. Since its introduction, this has included the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II by Jody Clark and, more recently, King Charles III. The bi-metallic composition consists of a gold-coloured nickel-brass outer ring and a silver-coloured nickel-plated alloy inner core. Advanced security features include micro-lettering, a latent image that changes between “£” and “1” when tilted, and a milled edge with alternating grooves.

The reverse of the current £1 coin displays a modern floral emblem combining the rose (England), thistle (Scotland), leek (Wales), and shamrock (Northern Ireland), representing the unity of the United Kingdom. Since 2017, the Royal Mint has also issued a wide range of commemorative and special reverse designs for collectors and circulation.
