50 Ringgit / Dollars Brunei Dollar (Issued 1967)
Withdrawn from circulation as part of a broader modernisation of Brunei’s currency programme, the 1967 fifty-ringgit note was superseded as successive issues updated the design and security standards of Brunei Dollar banknotes throughout the late twentieth century. Issued under the authority of the Government of Brunei at the point when the country was establishing its own distinct monetary identity, this note represents the opening chapter of the Kerajaan Brunei series that ran from 1967 to 1988. The denomination circulated during a formative period in Brunei’s economic history, and its eventual withdrawal reflected the ongoing need to introduce improved printing technologies and updated legal tender provisions.
On the front, the note is printed predominantly in dark olive-green and grey tones on cream-coloured paper, with a finely executed intaglio portrait of Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien III — the twenty-eighth Sultan of Brunei — positioned to the right of centre. The Sultan is depicted wearing a dark military-style uniform adorned with decorations and insignia, and a peaked cap with a dark band, rendered with considerable engraving detail that captures the texture of the fabric and the features of the face with precision. To the left of the portrait, the denomination text appears in a stacked, bold serif typeface reading “LIMA PULOH RINGGIT” in Malay above “FIFTY DOLLARS” in English, establishing the bilingual character of this issue. The issuing authority is stated prominently at the top of the note in two lines: “KERAJAAN BRUNEI” in larger capitals above “GOVERNMENT OF BRUNEI” in slightly smaller text, both centred across the upper portion. The serial number A/1 441598 appears twice — once in the upper left area and once towards the lower right — printed in dark ink against the pale background. The words “KELUARAN SERIES 1967” are visible in smaller type beneath the central denomination text, confirming the precise issue year. A signature appears below this inscription with the title “SULTAN” printed beneath it, attributing the note’s authority directly to the Sultan. The entire composition is framed by an intricate guilloché border incorporating fine lathe-work geometric patterns and decorative corner rosettes, with additional fine-line background patterns filling the field behind the portrait and denomination text, providing security against reproduction. Numerals “50” appear in each of the four corners, set within the decorative border framework.
The reverse is printed in the same olive-green and grey palette, dominated by a highly detailed engraved vignette of the Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque in Bandar Seri Begawan, depicted in three-quarter perspective view and showing the mosque’s large central dome, the prominent minaret rising to the left, flanking smaller domed turrets, and the colonnaded wings extending to either side. The architectural engraving is executed with exceptional precision, capturing the repetition of arched windows, ornamental detailing along the rooflines, and the reflective lagoon setting suggested in the foreground. A dramatic sky with engraved cloud formations fills the upper portion of the vignette. In the upper centre of the reverse, the issuing authority is rendered in Jawi script, reading as “Kerajaan Brunei,” flanked on either side by the numeral “50” set within fine circular guilloche rosettes matching the corner style of the obverse. Along the lower margin, the text “GOVERNMENT OF BRUNEI” is printed in clear roman capitals, with the numeral “50” repeated on either side. A small Brunei state emblem — showing the royal umbrella, wings, and crescent device — appears to the lower right of the central vignette. A decorative geometric band runs across the very bottom of the note beneath the lower text, incorporating a repeating diamond and chain motif that reinforces the formal character of the border design.
