50 Ringgit / Dollars Brunei Dollar (Issued 1973-1986)
The Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque in Bandar Seri Begawan stands as one of the most revered symbols of Brunei’s Islamic heritage and royal authority, its gilded dome and soaring minarets representing the spiritual heart of the nation since its completion in 1958. The 50 Ringgit note issued between 1973 and 1986 carries that same sense of national pride, bearing the portrait of the reigning Sultan alongside this iconic landmark to affirm both dynastic continuity and the Islamic foundations of the Bruneian state. For the people of Brunei during this period, the banknote served as a daily reminder of the monarchy’s central role in civic and religious life. This series, issued under the Kerajaan Brunei authority, marked a formative era in the nation’s modern monetary history.
On the front, the note is dominated by a formal portrait of Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, the 29th and current Sultan of Brunei, depicted in a dark military dress uniform adorned with medals and decorations, rendered in a finely engraved intaglio style that gives the portrait considerable depth and texture. The overall colour palette of the front is a combination of olive-green, purple, and grey tones, with the Sultan’s portrait occupying the right-hand portion of the note against an intricately patterned guilloché background of overlapping rosettes and fine geometric latticework. The issuing authority is clearly stated at the top in both Malay and English: “Kerajaan Brunei” and “Government of Brunei.” Beneath this, the denomination is printed prominently in large bold typeface in three lines — “Lima Puluh Ringgit” in Malay, followed by “Fifty Dollars” in English — with the numeral “50” appearing in each corner of the note. A serial number, A/6 022637, is printed twice in black ink — once in the upper left area and again in the lower right. The text “Keluaran Series” and the year “1986” appear in small print beneath the central denomination text, and a signature line reading “Sultan” is visible below this. The border of the note features a repeated diamond and scroll pattern in olive-green, framing the entire composition in a decorative manner consistent with the engraving conventions of mid-twentieth-century Commonwealth currency production.
The reverse of the note is printed entirely in olive-green and features a highly detailed intaglio engraving of the Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque, presented in a sweeping frontal composition that fills the majority of the design space. The mosque is shown with its large central dome flanked by a tall, slender minaret to the left, with smaller decorative turrets and ornamental elements visible across the roofline and façade. The arched colonnades of the mosque’s lower structure are rendered with fine line engraving, giving the image considerable architectural precision. Above the mosque, a dramatic clouded sky is suggested through graduated line work that adds depth to the scene. At the top of the reverse, the name “Kerajaan Brunei” is printed in Jawi script, centred between the numeral “50” in each upper corner, which are themselves set within guilloché rosette panels. A small royal crest or emblem is visible to the lower right of the central image. Along the bottom of the note, a decorative border of repeated foliate and interlocking geometric motifs runs the full width, above the printed text “Government of Brunei” flanked on either side by the numeral “50.”
