50 Ringgit / Dollars Brunei Dollar (Issued 2017)

The Autoriti Monetari Brunei Darussalam, the central monetary authority of Negara Brunei Darussalam, has maintained a Currency Interchangeability Agreement with Singapore since 1967, under which the Brunei Dollar and the Singapore Dollar are accepted at par in both countries. By 2017, this arrangement had endured for fifty years, representing one of the most stable bilateral currency agreements in the world and a cornerstone of both nations’ monetary frameworks. To mark this golden anniversary, the monetary authorities of Brunei and Singapore jointly issued commemorative polymer banknotes, with the Brunei fifty-ringgit note standing as a significant document of that enduring financial partnership. The 2017 issue continues to hold legal tender status within Brunei’s current currency system.

On the front, the note is printed on polymer substrate in a warm golden-amber palette, lending the entire surface a rich, lustrous quality. Dominating the right-hand portion of the note is a finely engraved portrait of Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah, the reigning Sultan of Brunei, depicted in a formal dark jacket and traditional black songkok headwear, rendered with precise intaglio-style detail that captures the texture of his clothing and the clarity of his features. The Sultan’s name, “Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah,” is printed in small text beneath the portrait, with the word “Sultan” appearing in a slightly larger caption directly below the image. The central denomination text reads “LIMA PULUH RINGGIT” in bold, commanding typography, positioned to the left of the portrait against the golden background. Above the issuing authority name “NEGARA BRUNEI DARUSSALAM,” printed in clear serif lettering across the top of the note, a large “$50” denomination indicator appears in the upper right corner with a double star or dot motif alongside it. To the left side of the note, a prominent commemorative emblem displays “50 YEARS” in large stylised numerals accompanied by floral decorative elements in purple and green, beneath which the text “CURRENCY INTERCHANGEABILITY AGREEMENT” and “Brunei Darussalam · Singapore” confirm the celebratory purpose of the issue. Below this emblem, a rectangular vignette depicts a domed mosque or royal building illuminated against a deep purple and green background, rendered in detailed polychrome printing. A serial number, E/2 135320, appears twice — once in vertical orientation along the right edge and once horizontally in the lower left — printed in dark green numerals. A Jawi script inscription reading “Wang Kertas Ini Sah Diperlakukan Dengan Nilai” appears in the central field, and a signature designated “Sultan” appears in Jawi script below the central text area.

The reverse of the note continues the warm golden-amber polymer ground and presents a richly composed commemorative scene celebrating the fifty-year partnership. On the left, a group of uniformed figures — appearing to be a ceremonial or military guard dressed in white uniforms and caps, carrying rifles at attention — is rendered in detailed illustrative engraving, evoking a formal ceremonial parade or guard of honour. To their right, a separate vignette depicts four individuals gathered around a table examining documents or maps together, suggesting a scene of official collaboration or planning, rendered in a softer, more illustrative style. In the background of the central scene, a lush tropical landscape includes trees and what appears to be a suspension bridge. The large numeral “50” is printed in the upper central area in bold golden tones, with the Jawi script text “نڬارا بروني دارالسلام” (Negara Brunei Darussalam) arching above it in elegant calligraphy. The denomination “FIFTY DOLLARS” is printed in bold serif lettering along the lower left, accompanied by a Jawi script equivalent to the right. On the right-hand side of the reverse, a distinct panel carries the text “1967–2017” in bold numerals and beneath it “50 YEARS OF CURRENCY INTERCHANGEABILITY AGREEMENT / SINGAPORE · BRUNEI DARUSSALAM,” framing the anniversary context clearly. Within this same right-side panel, a colour-shifting holographic or optically variable window element depicts the same domed building seen on the front, rendered in deep green, purple, and teal tones that shift with the viewing angle, serving as the primary security feature of the polymer note.
