1.000 Dollars Canadian Dollar (Issued 1937)

The Bank of Canada’s 1937 one-thousand-dollar note stands as one of the most distinguished pieces of Canadian monetary history, produced during the early years of the central bank’s operation, which was founded in 1934. Printed by the Canadian Bank Note Company, Limited, this high-denomination note was issued on 2nd January 1937 and circulated during a period when Canada’s financial institutions were consolidating their authority over the national currency. The note bears bilingual text in both English and French throughout, reflecting Canada’s constitutional commitment to its two founding European linguistic traditions. Its striking pink and dark-green colouration makes it immediately recognisable among Canadian issues of the era.

On the front, the central focus is an engraved oval portrait of Sir Wilfrid Laurier, Canada’s seventh Prime Minister and the first French-Canadian to hold that office, rendered in fine intaglio engraving with exceptional tonal depth and facial definition characteristic of the high-security printing standards of the period. Laurier’s portrait is framed within an oval cartouche, set against a background of intricate guilloché patterning that covers much of the note’s surface in a deep rose-pink hue, with contrasting dark-green tones forming the outer border and corner elements. To the upper left and upper right, the denomination “1000” appears in large numeral form alongside the text “1000 · M · 1000” and “MILLE” in the upper register. The bilingual issuing authority is prominently displayed in large bold lettering as “BANK OF CANADA” on the left and “BANQUE DU CANADA” on the right, separated by the central portrait. Below the portrait, the promise text reads “WILL PAY TO THE BEARER ON DEMAND” in English and “PAIERA AU PORTEUR SUR DEMANDE” in French. The denomination in full text — “ONE THOUSAND DOLLARS” and “MILLE DOLLARS” — appears in a central band beneath the portrait area. The date “OTTAWA, 2ND JAN. 1937” is printed on both the left and right panels. Two signatures appear in the lower section: that of J. A. C. Osborne as Deputy Governor and G. F. Towers as Governor of the Bank of Canada. The serial number A/A 0000196 appears twice in dark ink, positioned symmetrically in the upper-left and upper-right fields. The prefix letter “M” appears within the serial number area, and the plate designation “M 1000 M” is visible in the lower central region. The outer margins carry repeated guilloche-pattern borders and fine-line geometric ornaments in the dark-green tone, giving the note a highly formal and authoritative visual presence.

The reverse is printed entirely in a rich, deep crimson-rose tone, dominated by a large central allegorical vignette engraved in the classical academic style. The scene depicts two allegorical figures — a robed female figure and a cherubic child — positioned within an oval frame at the centre of the composition, surrounded by elaborate decorative scrollwork and foliate ornamentation. The female figure is draped in flowing classical robes and appears to be gesturing or presenting, whilst the small cherubic figure beside her holds what appears to be a small object or instrument. The engraving is executed with fine cross-hatching and line work that gives the figures pronounced dimensionality and a sculptural quality consistent with the highest standards of intaglio craftsmanship. To the upper portion of the reverse, the bilingual text “BANK OF CANADA” and “BANQUE DU CANADA” appear in serif lettering, flanked by ornamental flourishes and small decorative devices. Large “1000” numerals appear in bold relief on both the left and right sides of the central vignette, with fine-line guilloché fill within each numeral. At the lower margin, “ONE THOUSAND DOLLARS” and “MILLE DOLLARS” are printed in a central band. A small “M” medallion device is visible centrally at the lower register, framed by additional ornamental elements. Repeated “1000” micro-text and border patterns run along all four edges of the reverse, creating a continuous decorative frame around the entire composition.
