The Canadian one-cent coin, universally known as the penny, was a fixture of everyday change in Canada for more than a century. The 1995 issue was struck in bronze, an alloy of copper with small amounts of tin and zinc that gave the coin its warm reddish tone, and it has a smooth plain edge. Small and light, it was made for high-volume handling in tills and pockets. The penny was eventually withdrawn from circulation from 2012 onward, once the cost of making it outstripped its face value.

On the obverse, the coin carries a crowned portrait of Queen Elizabeth II facing right, the effigy designed by Dora de Pédery-Hunt and introduced in 1990. The surrounding legend reads “ELIZABETH II D·G·REGINA”, abbreviating her Latin title as Queen by the Grace of God, framed within a beaded border and the raised rim.

On the reverse appear two maple leaves joined on a single twig, Canada’s enduring national emblem, with “1 CENT” above, “CANADA” below and the date “1995” to the left. The small initials “KG” beside the leaves are those of the designer George Kruger Gray, whose maple-twig motif had featured on the cent since 1937.
