10 Cents, Canada (Issued 1942)

The Canadian ten cent piece, or dime, of this period was struck in .800 fine silver under King George VI, giving it a bright white lustre and a small, thin flan. It was a staple of everyday commerce across the Dominion. The coin has a reeded edge.

On the obverse appears the bare head of King George VI facing left, encircled by the Latin legend “GEORGIVS VI D:G:REX ET IND:IMP:”, naming him King by the Grace of God and Emperor of India, with the designer’s initials below the neck.

On the reverse sails the famous Bluenose, the celebrated Nova Scotian racing schooner, shown heeling under full canvas, with “CANADA” arched above, the date at the right, and the value “10 CENTS” along the foot. The design is the work of Emanuel Hahn.
