10 Dollars Canadian Dollar (Issued 2000-2004)
The Canadian Journey series $10 note, issued between 2000 and 2004, remains legal tender in Canada and has not been officially withdrawn from circulation, though it has been progressively superseded by the polymer Frontier series introduced from 2013 onwards. The Bank of Canada continues to honour all paper notes of this series, meaning holders can still exchange them through financial institutions and specialist currency services. Whilst these notes circulate less frequently in everyday commerce, their status as current legal tender means they retain their full face value for exchange purposes.
On the front, the note is dominated by a finely engraved portrait of Sir John A. Macdonald, Canada’s first Prime Minister, who served during 1867–1873 and 1878–1891, as confirmed by the bilingual caption visible along the lower portrait area. The engraving is rendered in exceptional detail, capturing the three-quarter facing pose of Macdonald with fine cross-hatched linework typical of intaglio printing, giving the image a pronounced tactile quality. The overall colour palette is predominantly purple and violet, with subtle transitions into mauve and lilac tones across the background. To the right of the portrait, a detailed architectural vignette depicts the Library of Parliament in Ottawa, its Gothic Revival stonework rendered with considerable precision. The word “CANADA” appears prominently at the upper centre in bold serif type, accompanied by the bilingual denomination “TEN · DIX / DOLLARS” directly beneath. The issuing authority is printed in both official languages along the left vertical margin, reading “BANK OF CANADA · BANQUE DU CANADA.” A large numeral “10” appears in deep purple at the lower right, printed with optically variable ink. A facsimile signature of the Governor of the Bank of Canada is visible in the lower right quadrant. Fine guilloché latticework fills the background across much of the face, providing a complex geometric foundation beneath the primary design elements. The serial number and additional security text appear in small print along the lower border.
The reverse of the note is rendered in matching purple and violet tones and carries imagery related to Canada’s remembrance and military heritage. The central composition features a figure in military dress using binoculars, set within an architectural arch, likely referencing the National War Memorial or a similar commemorative structure. To the right, two further figures in period dress are depicted in a formal setting, rendered with the same fine intaglio linework as the obverse. To the left of centre, a poppy motif in reddish-orange is clearly visible, accompanied by a passage of text in both English and French, referencing remembrance and sacrifice. A dove in flight appears in pale relief above the central scene, adding a symbolic dimension to the commemorative composition. The word “CANADA” is printed boldly in the upper right in matching typography to the obverse. The serial number “FDW7130657” appears twice along the lower register, printed in dark ink, flanked by registration bars used for quality control alignment. A large “10” numeral anchors the lower right corner of the reverse. Metallic security squares are visible along the right edge, forming part of the note’s integrated security thread system. The overall background is filled with fine microprinting and latticework patterns that complement the central imagery and deter counterfeiting.
