100 Dollars Canadian Dollar (Issued 2003-2009)

Embedded within the paper of the Canadian Journey series $100 note is a sophisticated metallic security thread woven vertically through the substrate, visible as a dark stripe running from top to bottom of the note when held to the light. The series also incorporated a watermark portrait integrated into the paper itself, alongside holographic elements and colour-shifting ink applied to the denomination numerals, all of which represented the Bank of Canada’s commitment to producing one of the most secure circulating banknotes in the world at the time of issue. Ultraviolet-reactive fibres are distributed throughout the paper, glowing under UV light to deter reproduction. These layered security measures made the Canadian Journey $100 among the most technically advanced banknotes of its era.

On the front, the note is dominated by an engraved portrait of Sir Robert Laird Borden, Prime Minister of Canada from 1911 to 1920, positioned to the left of centre in the classic intaglio style that gives the image a raised, tactile quality characteristic of high-denomination Canadian currency. The portrait is rendered in fine crosshatched engraving against a pale background that transitions through soft tones of beige and light brown. A caption beneath the portrait confirms the identification, reading “SIR ROBERT L. BORDEN PREMIER MINISTRE / PRIME MINISTER 1911–1920.” To the right of Borden’s portrait, a detailed architectural engraving depicts the East Block of Parliament Hill in Ottawa, its Gothic Revival stonework rendered with considerable precision in muted green and warm brown tones. The words “CANADA” appear prominently at the top centre of the note in bold serif typography, with “CENT · ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS” printed beneath in a smaller but equally authoritative typeface. The denomination “100” appears in large numerals to the lower right, printed in colour-shifting ink that shifts between gold and green depending on the viewing angle — a key anti-counterfeiting feature. The issuing authority text “BANK OF CANADA · BANQUE DU CANADA” runs vertically along the left margin. Two facsimile signatures of the Governor and Deputy Governor of the Bank of Canada appear along the lower right portion of the face, printed in a dark reddish-brown ink. Fine guilloché patterning fills the background across the face of the note, providing intricate geometric latticework in delicate pastel shades. The serial number and issue date “ÉMISSION DE 2004 / ISSUE OF 2004” are also printed on the face in small text.

The reverse of the note is dominated by a rich composition in warm earth tones of brown, olive green, and tan, centred on a large stylised topographic map of Canada rendered in considerable geographical detail, showing the country’s coastlines, major landmasses, and the Arctic archipelago. Above the map, a satellite — identifiable as a Canadian communications or Earth observation satellite — is depicted in orbit, referencing Canada’s achievements in space technology and the country’s RADARSAT programme. To the lower left, a smaller vignette depicts what appears to be a historical map or navigational chart alongside imagery evoking Canada’s tradition of exploration, rendered in a darker brown tone. Fine ornamental guilloché patterns fill the background of the reverse in light, almost watermark-like tones of beige and cream, providing texture against which the main imagery sits. A large dish aerial or ground station antenna is faintly visible to the right of the composition, complementing the satellite theme. The denomination “100” is printed in large numerals at both the far left and far right of the reverse in a warm reddish-brown. The serial number “EJA9139249” appears twice along the lower portion of the reverse, printed in dark ink at evenly spaced intervals. The word “CANADA” is printed in the upper right corner. A dark vertical strip along the right edge indicates the security thread visible from the reverse side.
