5 Cents, Canada (Issued 1940)

The Canadian five cent piece of this era was struck under King George VI as part of the Dominion of Canada’s decimal coinage. Made of nickel with a pale silvery-grey colour, it was a hard-wearing everyday coin, larger and heavier than the small silver denominations. It has a round flan with a plain edge.

On the obverse appears the bare head of King George VI facing left, surrounded by the Latin legend “GEORGIVS VI D:G:REX ET IND:IMP:”, naming him by the Grace of God King and Emperor of India, with the designer’s initials below the truncation and a beaded border around the rim.

On the reverse sits a beaver on a rock at the water’s edge, gnawing a log, with the value “5 CENTS” above between two maple leaves, “CANADA” and the date below, and the designer’s initials “K·G” for George Kruger Gray at the lower left.
