1 Chilean Peso (Issued 1979)

The one peso coin belongs to the peso coinage Chile introduced after its 1975 currency reform, which replaced the escudo. Struck in aluminium-bronze that gives it a warm golden colour, it is a small, light coin with a plain edge, made to circulate as everyday low-value change.

On the obverse is the bust of Bernardo O’Higgins, the liberator and founding father of independent Chile, facing right in uniform. The legend reads “REPÚBLICA DE CHILE” around the upper edge, with “LIBERTADOR B. O’HIGGINS” to the right and the “S” mint mark of the Santiago mint below.

On the reverse, a large numeral “1” sits above the word “PESO” and the date “1979”, the whole flanked by two curved olive branches that meet at the foot of the coin.
