10 Pesos Peso (Issued 1975)

The Battle of Rancagua and the soldiers who fought in Chile’s wars of independence have long occupied a central place in Chilean national identity, commemorated in art, monuments, and currency alike. The 1975 peso issue arrived at a pivotal moment in Chilean history, following the currency reform that replaced the escudo and sought to restore financial stability under a new monetary framework. Featuring key figures and episodes from the independence era, these notes served as a daily reminder of Chile’s foundational struggles and the sacrifices made to establish the republic. For the Chilean public, these images carried deep patriotic resonance at a time of considerable national transformation.

On the front, the note is printed predominantly in warm terracotta and salmon-red tones across cream-coloured paper, presenting a composition of considerable engraved detail. The central right portion of the note is dominated by a finely engraved portrait of Bernardo O’Higgins, the celebrated liberator and first Supreme Director of Chile, depicted in military dress uniform with epaulettes, a high collar, and a formal coat befitting his rank. The portrait is rendered with fine intaglio line work, capturing his youthful features in three-quarter profile facing left. To the left of the portrait, the central panel carries the bold denomination text “DIEZ PESOS” in large serif lettering, with the year “1975” printed beneath. Above, the issuing authority is named in full as “BANCO CENTRAL DE CHILE” in clear capital lettering spanning the upper portion of the note. The serial number “1572648” appears twice — in the upper left and lower right corners — accompanied by the prefix “A 16” in both positions. A decorative vignette occupying the left side of the note depicts what appears to be a civic monument or lantern structure, engraved with architectural and ornamental detail. Guilloché patterning fills the background across the entire face of the note, providing an intricate lace-like security underprint in a slightly lighter red tone. The numeral “10” appears in the upper left and lower right corners in contrasting positions. Two facsimile signatures appear beneath the central panel, accompanied by the titles “PRESIDENTE” and “GERENTE GENERAL” respectively. Along the lower edge, the text “CAJA DE MONEDA DE CHILE” identifies the printing authority.

The reverse is printed in matching terracotta and deep salmon-red tones, dominated by a large and dramatically rendered engraved scene occupying the left and central portions of the note. Captioned along the lower edge with the inscription “BATALLA DE RANCAGUA,” the scene depicts the famous Battle of Rancagua of 1814, a fierce engagement from Chile’s independence struggle. Figures on horseback and on foot are shown in the midst of battle, with smoke and fire rising behind them, a tower or fortified structure visible in the background, and considerable movement and turmoil conveyed through the dense engraved linework. The scene is executed with strong contrast and dynamic composition, typical of the historical battle imagery used in Latin American currency of this period. To the right of the battle scene, a large unprinted oval reserve area — likely serving as a watermark viewing zone — sits prominently against the guilloché-patterned background. The denomination “10” appears in the upper left, and the text “DIEZ PESOS” is printed in bold lettering along the lower right. The issuing bank name “BANCO CENTRAL DE CHILE” is displayed across the upper right portion of the reverse. Decorative guilloché rosette patterns are visible along the left and right margins, providing additional security patterning consistent with the design conventions of the series.
