50 Chilean Pesos coin

50 Chilean Pesos (Issued 1991)

The fifty pesos coin was one of the higher circulating denominations of the Chilean peso coinage. Struck in aluminium-bronze with a golden tone, it has a distinctive decagonal (ten-sided) shape and a beaded inner border, features that made it easy to tell apart from other coins by touch and sight.

On the obverse is the bust of Bernardo O’Higgins, the liberator of Chile, facing right in uniform, with a beaded rim following the ten-sided outline. The legend “REPÚBLICA DE CHILE” arcs over the top, “LIBERTADOR B. O’HIGGINS” sits beside the portrait, and the “S” mint mark of Santiago appears below.

On the reverse, a large numeral “50” stands above “PESOS” and the date “1991”, enclosed within two curved olive branches that meet at the foot.
